Showering could cause brain damage
A study by US scientists has suggested that showering can cause brain damage through exposure to manganese, a toxic metal found dissolved in water.

Water suppliers must follow strict guidelines for “safe levels” in water but researchers warn that these do not account for the effects of steam inhalation while showering, which can lead to a “direct unfiltered pathway of toxins”.

Dr John Spangler, of Wake Forest University School of Medicine, North Carolina, said: "If confirmed, our results could have profound implications for the world."

Research on rats revealed that a ten-minute shower once a day caused brain and spinal damage, behavioural problems and a condition similar to Parkinson’s disease.

It is believed that children who have used showers for ten years could be exposed to manganese levels three times higher than those which harmed the rats, while adult exposure may be 50 per cent greater.

But a spokesman for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs said there was little cause for concern.

"The levels set by the EU are safe for individuals who choose to shower," he said.
