The nursing union RCN Scotland will today call for staff to be treated with respect in a bid to cut the number of New Year assaults in hospitals.
RCN Scotland said hospital staffs often have to face drink and drug-fuelled abuse from the very people they are trying to help.
According to NHS Scotland, one in 10 staff suffers verbal or physical attacks each year with nurses and midwives at the end of most violent incidents.
RCN Scotland director James Kennedy said: "No nurse should have to deal with violence or abusive behaviour as part of their job.
"While most families are enjoying New Year celebrations together, we must remember that not everyone is on holiday.
"Aggression towards health professionals should not be tolerated at any time and I would appeal to anyone who uses these services over the New Year period to treat staff with the respect and gratitude they deserve”.

The NHS Staff Council met yesterday and collectively agreed to endorse AfC.
Dave Prentis, UNISON General Secretary, said:
“It’s taken five years, but today we see the birth of a new NHS which will deliver fairer pay and greater opportunity for over 1m staff.
The NHS is the biggest employer in Europe and, as a result of Agenda for Change, it will become a beacon employer for the public and private sector.
It’s an equal pay system designed to cut out the inequalities and demarcations that were rife in the current antiquated pay system and will mean an immediate pay rise for 92% of staff.
The RCN said:
"This is a historic milestone for nurses. Agenda for Change finally values and rewards nurses for the work they do and their professionalism within the health service."

A new report by the Royal College of Nurses warns the cost of employing temporary NHS nursing staff has risen to over £6million.
The report, A Fragile Future?, shows demand for nurses in the UK is not being met. Many nurses leave the profession early and increasing numbers leave to work overseas.
A large number of nurses have been recruited from abroad but the RCN warns this may not be the long-term solution.

A report by The Royal College of Nursing (RCN), has revealed that the number of nurses who left the UK to work in America more than doubled last year, prompting concerns of an impending exodus and deterioration in patient care.
The report shows a record number of nurses left Britain last year to work abroad, lured by huge pay rises, bonuses and improved living and working conditions.
Beverly Malone, general secretary of the RCN, said the increase over one year was striking and, if sustained, could lead to deterioration in patient care in Britain.
The figures have been released ahead of the college's annual report into the state of nursing, due out on Monday.

The Royal College of Nursing (RCN) claims a massive expansion of school nurses is required.
At present there are fewer than 3,000 school nurses in the UK, covering almost 30,000 schools.
The RCN says many more nurses are needed in primary and secondary schools to teach children about public health issues such as smoking, sexual health, diet and exercise.
It accused the government of doing to little to ensure there are enough nurses. Ministers said they were committed to increasing the numbers.
